Community Development Corporation of Oregon (CDCO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening East Multnomah County through initiatives focused on housing, economic development, education, food systems, and community health. As the organization expanded its portfolio of affiliated programs, maintaining a consistent brand experience across multiple teams became increasingly important.
Building on the existing brand identities developed by a local design agency, I led the development of a scalable brand governance system that standardized visual identity, marketing assets, and brand documentation across seven affiliated organizations. The result was a unified system that improved collaboration, increased operational efficiency, and empowered teams to confidently create on-brand communications.
As CDCO's network of affiliated organizations continued to grow, so did the complexity of managing their marketing materials. Each program served a unique audience with its own communication needs, yet all needed to remain connected under the broader CDCO mission.
Without a centralized system, maintaining consistency across marketing collateral, presentations, and digital assets became increasingly difficult. The challenge was to create a flexible brand governance framework that supported individual program needs while strengthening organizational alignment.
Rather than treating each organization as an independent design project, I approached the work as a long-term operational initiative. I expanded the existing brand standards into comprehensive governance documents that established clear guidance for typography, color, logo usage, layouts, and branded communications. I also standardized commonly used marketing assets—including business cards, letterheads, presentation templates, envelopes, and digital collateral—to create consistency across the organization.
To encourage long-term adoption, I organized brand assets in Canva Pro and the organization's internal file system, making it easier for staff to locate approved materials, collaborate efficiently, and produce consistent marketing communications without recreating assets from scratch.

The governance system served eight affiliated organizations: Community Development Corporation of Oregon, East County Business Bridge, East County Community Health, East County Housing, Rockwood Community Development Corporation, Rockwood English Language Institute, Rockwood Food Systems Collaborative, and HOME Pathways. Each organization maintained its own voice and audience while operating within a consistent visual framework that strengthened recognition and improved the overall brand experience.
The goal extended beyond creating design assets; it was to build a system that supported daily marketing operations.By developing reusable templates, centralized asset libraries, and documented brand standards, staff members gained the resources they needed to create on-brand communications more efficiently. The governance system reduced inconsistencies, simplified collaboration across departments, and established a sustainable process for future marketing initiatives.
With a consistent brand system in place, affiliated organizations were able to deliver cohesive marketing campaigns across a wide range of community initiatives.
The governance framework supported communications for housing conferences, health fairs, workforce development programs, educational initiatives, business support services, food access programs, and community events throughout East Multnomah County.
Rather than building new assets for every initiative, teams were able to leverage an established system that improved efficiency while maintaining a cohesive organizational identity.
The project established a scalable brand governance framework that strengthened marketing operations across the organization. Key outcomes included:
